U.S. to evacuate American citizens from Wuhan amid coronavirus outbreak

The United States government has arranged a charter flight to evacuate American citizens and officials from the coronavirus-infected Chinese city of Wuhan, according to sources close to the situation.

The U.S. consulate is currently reaching out to the roughly 1,000 American citizens and diplomats in Wuhan to offer them a seat on the plane. The plane seats approximately 230 people and all passengers will be responsible for the costs.

The evacuation operation was initiated after the death toll in Wuhan rose to 40 and the number of confirmed infections climbed to 1,200. The fast-spreading nature of the coronavirus, including two cases in the United States, has many governments on high alert.

The U.S. government has also offered any available seats to non-U.S. citizens, including diplomats from other countries.
