Check out these up close photo’s of the unexploded bombs that’s been sitting imbedded in the lava up on Mauna Loa.
These bombs were dropped on either the 1935 or 1942 lava flows in an attempt to divert the lava flow from possibly flowing into Hilo.
About a month ago, a hiker stumbled across two old bombs stuck in the lava while walking in the lava fields of Mauna Loa, Hawaii.
Now, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) has confirmed that the two “pointer bombs” were dropped in an attempt to divert the lava flow from a massive eruption of Mauna Loa in 1935.
The two bombs were part of a cluster dropped by U.S. Army Air Corps planes on the Humu‘ula lava flow on December 27, 1935.
The bombing was carried out as the eruption was already waning and the explosions did not start a new flow at the source. The Humu‘ula flow did not cease abruptly after the bombing but died slowly over the following week. More volcanic news on https://theremnants.info
